Welcome to Snippet Sunday on Darkling Dreams!
Where writers come together to share a few sentences (8-10) of their current project — whether it’s a recently released novel, a WIP (work in progress), or an older manuscript that’s being revived. Intended to hook readers, gather feedback and build an author’s fan base, Snippet Sunday is the FB group that does all three.

I am still going to continue on with the first book in the Dark Heir Chronicles, Fated to Darkness. When I’m going to switch to something new, I’m not quite sure yet. Maybe next month. I don’t know. We’ll see. For now, get lost in Heather’s very real nightmare.
Previously on Sunday Snippets: Four year old Heather had been kidnapped from her home by a woman clad in black and whisked off to another realm where she found her kidnapper wanted her to be her Heir. But not just any Heir. After being locked up and put through a ritual that has changed her and her life forever — though she does not yet know it — she has found herself in a small bare essential room with a tiny bathroom, and her new mentor has instructed her to clean herself up and be ready in ten minutes.
Skipping ahead about a page from last week’s snippet. The door has opened and Heather’s kidnapper has returned, pleased to see her dressed and complying. Her kidnapper has yet to give an explanation to her eye color change from last week, though she notices her reaction to it. My villain speaks first here, after Heather has finally asked who she is — at which she gave a title (Dark One) and not a name — Heather has now asked her real name.
(Some sentences may have been creatively edited and punctuated to try to fit the ten sentence limit. I know, I’m WAY over this week, I can’t help it. Once I find the bit I want, I can’t make myself shorten it anyhow.)
—
“Ciara,” she finally spoke, her voice dripping with malice at the word; it sounded as evil as she looked and acted, let alone thought. Heather didn’t say anything back to that and just looked at her. Now that the woman didn’t seem to be threatening or hurting her at the moment, her curiosity was starting to pique; she was starting to get a lot of questions.
She glanced from the candle to the woman, then back to the flickering flame of it. “H-How did you do that?” she asked. If she hadn’t known any better, she would have called it magic; but magic wasn’t really real, was it? Those were things of fairy tales and Disney, but then again, all of this was more than just reality as well — she’d been forced into a nightmare.
“Magic,” the woman spoke simply, like it was a common thing.
So it was real?
“Sit,” she instructed Heather rather sharply, leaving no room for argument as she motioned to the cot. She did as she was told after a moment’s hesitation and looked warily back to the woman. “Do you have any idea what I am?”
Heather shook her head. “H-Human?” she guessed. The people of fairy tales were human and had magic. Well, some of them. “Sorceress?” The word came out a little wrong, her having difficulty in pronouncing it yet.
“No. Though rather close to a sorceress or enchantress. I am a witch, and now, you are too.”
That was bombshell of information and Heather could barely wrap her mind around it. That wasn’t possible, she was human. She didn’t have magic. “I-I’m human,” she protested.
“Not anymore, Heir.” She took a few steps towards her until she was looming over her and Heather shrank down in fear yet. “Don’t you feel it?”
“F-Feel what?” she asked timidly.
“That rush running through your veins. That almost adrenaline-like high that is pulsing through you. It’s a powerful, wicked feeling, and a tinge of cold to it that chills you. Don’t you feel it?”

A bit of explanation, too, Heather asking about how she did that with the candle is referring to what happened pages ago. With a flick of her hand Ciara had lit the candle’s wick, that is what she is asking about.
This story is not yet on Wattpad because it is my baby that I hope to publish one day, and if no one will publish me, I am self publishing. But it’s also not on Wattpad because it’s in first draft phases yet. So there will be no “if you wish to read more…” And I do technically have a cover made but since my little crisis in changing the title…that’s going to change now, too.
However! If you wish to read anything else that I do have finished, you can hop on over to my profile on Wattpad and check out what I have to offer. I love to hear any and all feedback on my work as well. Comments are greatly appreciated, as are the reads.
And if you’re looking for some other great snippets of fellow authors,

Poor Heather–this has to be so scary for her. I can’t wait to read more!

Scary isn’t going to be a strong enough adjective for this poor girl. Just wait for next week. ;)
Thanks for reading, Nancy! :)

Ciara seems almost nice at a couple points in this. (And I love her name.)

Glad you like the name! Wait till you find out her last name then, though it could be awhile for that. Haven’t decided in what book and/or part that’ll be revealed. As for her sounding almost nice… What better way to confuse the child and be able to manipulate her than keep her guessing on what Ciara’s going to do? There’s a reasoning behind it.
Thanks for reading, P.T.! :)

Interesting developments all right! I’m seriously hoping the little girl grows up, masters the Magic and does away with the unpleasant Ciara LOL!

Keep dreaming, I say. Keep dreaming. But you aren’t going to find that out for a loooooong time. I still have yet to determine how books this series is going to be. But I do know where she ends up, and no, I’m not spoiling. Mwahaha! ;)
Thanks for reading, Veronica! :)

I wonder what will happen if she says no. I also wonder why that witch needs to be so wicked to make an heir. hum….

You sure you want to know the answer to that first one? Well, you’ll find out soon enough either way. As for that second answer… Start guessing. ;)
Thanks for reading, Linda! :)

Love the image of the flickering light. It gives the whole scene the perfect atmosphere along with the discussion of things ethereal & fantastical.
